Description

Commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Church of the Epiphany, Washington,

DC, the Missa Miamiensis was composed during July and August of 1993 while the composer was on sabbatical in Miami Beach, (hence the “Latinized” title which translates  as The Miami Mass.) As Organist and Director of Music for this parish from 1987-1994, James Buonemani scored the work for musical forces that were readily available at the church: a Steinway concert grand piano, an Aeolian-Skinner organ with a commanding “State Trumpet,” a fine soprano saxophonist who was a member of the choir, and a choir with soloists. The field drum part was conceived later during the writing of the Sanctus to evoke the assembling together of  “Angels and Archangels and the whole company of heaven.” The premiere took place on June 5, 1994, at a special Sesquicentennial Mass with the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, The Most Rev. Edmond Lee Browning, officiating. The work has since received multiple performances in Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles, and has received minor revisions for each of those performances resulting in the authoritative edition available here.
